LEWISVILLE SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION • October 17, 2009
Thanks to the planning and hard work of the Lewisville Historical Society, the Town of Lewisville celebrated its 150th anniversary with a variety of activities, exhibits and tours during the Lewisville Sesquicentennial Celebration at Shallowford Square. Events and activities included historic home tours, bluegrass and brass music, square dancing, wagon rides, children’s games, old-fashioned crafts and a flower show. To wrap up the day’s activities, members of the West Side Civic Theatre performed a reenactment of the marriage of town founder, Lewis Laugenour, and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Nissen, followed by a cake and ice cream reception. BEST OF LEWISVILLE FESTIVAL • September 19, 2009
Sponsored by Karate International of Lewisville and MediaFit, the first annual Best of Lewisville Festival kicked off an energetic, entertaining day at Shallowford Square. Activities included karate and clogging demonstrations, as well as games such as laser tag, the three-legged race and the cornhole tournament. The celebration of Lewisville life included contests for the best flowers, art, food, essay, citizen — and even the prettiest baby. LEWISVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY • CIVIL WAR HISTORY • September 14, 2009
The Lewisville Historical Society welcomed Civil War reenactors, Brad Craver and his sons, Austin and Andrew, to their outdoor meeting under the oak trees at Shallowford Square. Dressed in full Civil War garb, the Cravers brought relics of the Civil War era, including items typically carried in a soldier’s haversack (backpack), as well as weapons such as a sword, a pistol and a rifle that was loaded and fired by both Austin and Andrew. With the help of the various visual aids, Brad enthusiastically described some of what life was like for Civil War soldiers. WEST SIDE CIVIC THEATRE • THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE • Sept 4-6&10-12, 2009
The West Side Civic Theatre performed the classic Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance, at Shallowford Square. Besides the pirates, the main characters included love-struck Mabel and Frederick, the goofy Police Corps and the affable Major General. STARLIGHT MOVIE NIGHT • KAZOOBIE KAZOO SHOW • August 14, 2009
Preceding the evening movie (Madagascar 2), The Kazoobie Kazoo Show — Rick Hubbard’s one-man band — kicked off the evening with a steady stream of entertaining moments. Rick performed non-stop on his electric guitar, banjo, steel drum and, of course, his signature kazoo. From the smallest of children to some very “kool” adults, there was plenty of energetic dancing, singing, shaking and bubble blowing. Everyone had fun at The Kazoobie Kazoo Show! YADKIN VALLEY HISTORICAL ASSOC. • HISTORY CONFERENCE • August 8, 2009
The 4th Annual Yadkin Valley History Fair & Conference was held at Lewisville United Methodist Church and featured a variety of speakers, exhibitors, authors and historians. Tom Magnuson was the keynote speaker, addressing the theme, “Transportation in the Yadkin Valley Before the Automobile.” Live music was provided by R. G. Absher. The conference wrapped up with a tour to the Nissen House and the Nissen Wagon Museum in Lewisville, and a tour to the Hattie Butner Stagecoach and the Paul Clemmons House/Stagecoach Stop in Clemmons. MUSIC UNDER THE STARS • TAMMIE DAVIS • August 8, 2009
Singer-songwriter Tammie Davis and her band headlined Lewisville’s second Music Under the Stars summer concert in Shallowford Square with sweet and sassy Country, Southern Rock and Americana selections. FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION • July 4, 2009
This year’s Fourth of July Celebration in Shallowford Square featured The DownTown Band playing non-stop under the pavilion till the last blast of the fireworks sounded later in the evening. The band’s range of pop and southern and classic rock offered something for almost everyone. An enthusiastic crowd gathered throughout the evening — some dancing to the music, some tossing Frisbees, and others simply enjoying each others’ company. BEACH BLAST • June 20, 2009
A hot June day and hot music made for a perfect Beach Blast in Lewisville, North Carolina. Music, laughter, and the wonderful aroma of grilled burgers, hot dogs, ribs and other treats filled the air around Shallowford Square. The Fabulous Kays, from Charlotte, opened the event, followed later by The Embers. Dancers enjoyed swaying to the steady flow of beach music in the “beach area” in front of the bandstand. Although Deb’s plan to photograph the entire event was unexpectedly cut short, the photos in the gallery still depict the variety of activities and fun enjoyed by all ages. LEWISVILLE LIBRARY • SUMMER READING KICK-OFF • June 15, 2009
The children’s music group, Big Bang Boom, helped the Lewisville Library kick off its 2009 Summer Reading Program under the oak trees at Shallowford Square. Children sang and danced to the band’s fun tunes and imaginative lyrics, and they also enjoyed Sno-Kones and playing with bubbles. CHRIS PAUL PLAQUE CEREMONY • June 11, 2009
The Town of Lewisville honored one of its own, Chris Paul, with a special ceremony to unveil a plaque at Shallowford Square honoring Chris as a gold medalist on the 2008 Olympics USA Basketball Team. Mayor Dan Pugh and Kurt Telford, principal of West Forsyth High School, also shared their personal recollections and observations of Chris’ admirable work ethic, character and community contributions, as well as recounting his numerous athletic accomplishments in high school, college and presently in the NBA as a member of the New Orleans Hornets. Third-graders from Lewisville Elementary School were also on hand to present a gift to Chris and to lend their heartfelt support as some of his biggest fans. WEST SIDE CIVIC THEATRE • PETER PAN • June 5–7 and 11–13, 2009
With Peter Pan as the first production of their eleventh season, West Side Civic Theatre demonstrated once more why large crowds continue to flock to their ever-popular shows. This production of Peter Pan stretched the cast, as well as the budget, enabling the theater company to pull off an engaging tale of flying children, snarly pirates and dancing Indians. MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE • May 25, 2009

DOUBLE SPRINGS AME ZION CHURCH • MEMORIAL CELEBRATION • May 23, 2009
Friends, family and a few remaining former members of the historic Double Springs AME Zion Church gathered at the church’s graveyard for a memorial celebration. They honored those who had gone before them in the founding of the church and in the life of the church until its final service in 1982. They also recounted the efforts that began over ten years ago to clean up, repair and improve the graveyard. Following the ceremony, a scrumptious lunch was served on the grounds. MUSIC UNDER THE STARS • WEST FORSYTH JAZZ BAND • May 16, 2009
The West Forsyth Jazz Band played for the season’s first Music Under the Stars concert series at Shallowford Square. METRIC BIKE RIDE • May 9, 2009
Area bikers turned out for the annual Metric Bike Ride offering the choice of three routes — the 24-, the 42- or the 62-mile ride. All three routes took the bikers across the Yadkin River and back to the G. Galloway Reynolds Community Center in downtown Lewisville. HISTORIC GRAVEYARD TOUR • May 2, 2009
The 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour was sponsored by the Sesquicentennial Steering Committee of the Lewisville Historical Society. The tour took participants to six area graveyards — Concord United Methodist Church, Double Springs AME Zion Curch, Panther Creek Plantation, Lewisville Baptist Church, Lewisville United Methodist Church and Shiloh Lutheran Church. A brief historical session was given at each graveyard. STARLIGHT MOVIE NIGHT • KUNG FU PANDA • April 24, 2009
The Town of Lewisville kicked off its first Starlight Movie Night of the season in Shallowford Square with the movie, Kung Fu Panda. New this year were games and prizes for children, facilitated by the town staff, as well as random drawings for assorted prizes. LEWISVILLE LIBRARY • VEGETABLE GARDENING WORKSHOP • March 23, 2009
Ann Williams, a Master Gardener and a Forsyth County Extension Agent, led a workshop titled Beginning Vegetable Gardening, with about 50 in attendance. Topics included gardening tools, soil testing, tips on buying seeds and how to keep animals from eating our vegetables and flowers. The workshop is one of a series of gardening workshops being co-sponsored this spring by the Forsyth County Public Library system and the Forsyth County – NC Cooperative Extension Service. Various individuals shared their memories related to the Great Depression, including the main speaker, James E. “Jim” Munden Sr., who is the author of The Spring of ’31: A Kid’s View of the Great Depression. SHALLOW FORD WALK • March 7, 2009
A small band of explorers set out on an adventure to trace portions of the Great Wagon Road (developed in the mid-1700s) to and from the historic Shallow Ford on the Yadkin River. The day was a perfect blend of regional history discussions and real-life exploration that took eager participants through open fields and undeveloped woods to the Shallow Ford, on both the Yadkin County and the Forsyth County sides of the Yadkin River. The event was sponsored by the Lewisville Sesquicentennial Committee and the Yadkin Valley Historical Association. Friends of Miss Nicie Lambeth helped celebrated her 100th birthday at Bethlehem AME Zion Church in grand style. They expressed their love in song, poem, recollections, Scripture and prayer. Miss Nicie also received a plaque from the Town of Lewisville denoting the earlier proclamation of the “Miss Nicie Ophelia Lambeth Day” on her birthday, February 18, 2009. The Lewisville Historical Society hosted a reception at the Lewisville Library to celebrate all those who had played a role in the relocation of and in the ongoing restoration efforts of the Nissen House. The house movers, town officials, donors, laborers and volunteers who participated in a number of ways were individually recognized for their respective roles. Among the attendees were U.S. Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, Forsyth County Commissioner Debra Conrad, and Lewisville’s mayor and town council members. NEW HOPE AME ZION CHURCH • 125TH ANNIVERSARY • February 1, 2009
New Hope AME Zion Church, which is served by Rev. Louis Hunter Jr. and his wife, Patricia, celebrated its 125th Anniversary with many members, friends and family in attendance. Among the crowd of celebrants were pastors from other churches, as well as Lewisville’s mayor and several town council members. NISSEN HOUSE • THE WINSTON-SALEM FOUNDATION GIFT • January 29, 2009
The President of The Winston-Salem Foundation, Scott Wierman, presented a $25,000 check to the Lewisville Historical Society for the Nissen House Restoration Project. TOWN HALL GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY • January 13, 2009
Lewisville held the Groundbreaking Ceremony for its new Town Hall at the corner of Shallowford Road and Lucy Lane, across from the Lewisville Library. Members of the town council, the architectural firm, and the construction company, along with the mayor and town manager, took up the ceremonial shovels and officially broke ground for the new Town Hall.
