LEWISVILLE ROLLER MILLS’ 100TH ANNIVERSARY  • October 16, 2010

Casanova’s Coffees & Fudge hosted a party in honor of Lewisville Roller Mills’ 100th anniversary. The celebration included an art show, kids carnival with games and prizes, live music, an old-fashioned cake walk, historical exhibits, wine tasting, a commemorative postal stamp for letter cancellation and a raffle for a pen-and-ink drawing of the mill. The Lewisville Library also benefited through donations of money and books. Members of the Jennings family, who operated the mill until it closed in 1984, were on hand to share and reminisce about the mill. READ THE BLOG POST FOR THIS EVENT >>

Most of the pictures (in mass circulation photography magazines) suggest embarrassing strain: odd angles, extreme lenses, and eccentric darkroom techniques reveal a struggle to substitute shock and technology for sight. How many photographers of importance, after all, have relied on telephoto lenses? Instead, their work is usually marked by an economy of means, an apparently everyday sort of relationship with their subject matter. —Robert Adams
