Life Moments – and Ratatouille – at the Square

September 23, 2008 · By Deb Phillips – The Photo Gal

Children at the Starlight Movie Night, one of several movie nights for the year, at Shallowford Square in Lewisville, North Carolina (Forsyth County). Deb Phillips, photographer.

After a long day on assignment last Friday, I was tempted to pass up the opportunity to photograph the Starlight Movie Night at Shallowford Square. The movie, Ratatouille, was scheduled to begin at dusk, and there would likely be a lot of children and families there. Looking back, I’m really glad I showed up.

That’s because some of my best new friends are energetic little fireballs — and they’re also camera hams! You’d think my cameras had magnets on them! Yet these little ones had an irresistible magnetism of their own.

Believe me, I tried to move on after snapping a few pics of them. But their enthusiasm kept pulling me (and my heart) back to them! To paraphrase Captain Jean-Luc Picard while under the influence of the Borg: “Resistance was fu-TILE.”

I’m so glad they “detained” me, though, because in one of the many wild moments during which they were bounding here and there, I caught this great shot. Aren’t they simply beautiful? Is it possible to look at this photo without smiling, even a little?

This is just one of several nice moments captured at Shallowford Square last Friday evening. There was a great energy in the crowd that made them fun to photograph and talk to. Many of them had come with blankets and jackets in preparation for the dipping temperatures after sunset.

Maybe it was the comfortably cool air, or the prospect of watching a great Pixar flick. Whatever the reason, there was something extra special in the air last Friday evening in Shallowford Square — and I’m glad I was there!
