The Next Stop on the Tour

The fourth of six stops on the 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour that was held on May 2, 2009 in Lewisville took us to the graveyard at Lewisville Baptist Church. (Click to read the previous post on the Historic Graveyard Tour at Panther Creek Plantation.)

Although the graveyard at Lewisville Baptist Church is not as old as some of the other graveyards on the tour, such as the Shiloh Lutheran Church and the Concord United Methodist Church graveyards, it nevertheless holds historic significance.

Leading this segment of the graveyard tour was Mary Alice Warren, a member of Lewisville Baptist Church. Mary Alice concentrated her brief talk on the center portion of the graveyard that includes the gravestones of Lewisville’s founder, Lewis Laugenour, and his wife, Betty.

Historic Graveyard Tour

Tour Overview

This past Saturday (May 2, 2009) I joined about 20 other individuals on the Historic Graveyard Tour that took us to six historic graveyards in the Lewisville Township. The tour began at the Lewisville Library and was sponsored by the Lewisville Historical Society’s Sesquicentennial Steering Committee. The six graveyards we visited are located at the following sites:

• Concord United Methodist Church
• Double Springs AME Zion Church (the church building no longer exists)
• Panther Creek Plantation (private property)
• Lewisville Baptist Church
• Lewisville United Methodist Church
• Shiloh Lutheran Church

Before departing for our first stop, each tour participant received a handout with information on each historic graveyard. Upon arriving at each graveyard, we were met by an individual who provided additional history regarding each site.

Upcoming Coverage

I took a number of photos at each graveyard, and I also tried to capture some audio of the oral historical session provided at each site. Over the next few weeks, I’ll feature each graveyard separately, with lots of photos, and possibly some audio, if the recording quality is good. I’ll be interspersing the coverage of each graveyard between other Lewisville events until each of the graveyards has been covered.

Halloween Night in Lewisville

The Lewisville Fire Department and Lewisville Baptist Church hosted separate Halloween events Friday evening that were attended by families and youth from Lewisville and surrounding communities. I tried my best to be at both places at once!

At the Lewisville Fire Department, several large inflatable Halloween displays and a costumed Dalmatian mascot drew the curious attention of young trick-or-treaters. After making their way through a spooky maize (constructed of hay bales) and collecting their treats, many families went on a pleasant hayride that circled Shallowford Square and returned to the fire station.

Meanwhile, at Lewisville Baptist Church, trick-or-treaters attending the church’s Trunk or Treat event were greeted by enthusiastic church members offering candy treats — with flare and originality — from their car trunks or truck beds. And as if that weren’t enough, the church then provided free hot dogs, soda, popcorn and cotton candy to its delighted visitors.

With my time being split between the two events, it was a bit of a challenge to try to cover both events well. The main challenge I faced, though, was the diminishing daylight. As the late-evening light gradually faded away, it was increasingly more difficult to get quality shots, even using a flash, which does not always yield the kind of natural-looking images that I prefer.
