Historic Graveyard Tour – Lewisville UMC

Ruth Reynolds Hartle, a long-time member of Lewisville United Methodist Church, looks across the graveyard behind the church during the 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour.
More History Lessons
The fifth of six stops on the 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour that was held on May 2, 2009 brought us to Lewisville United Methodist Church.
In 2003 Ruth Reynolds Hartle wrote a series of articles on the history of Lewisville United Methodist Church that appeared in the church’s monthly newsletters, leading up to its 125th anniversary celebration in October 2003. (Ruth’s sources for the articles were the church archives and the book, The History of Lewisville United Methodist Church 1878–1988, written by her brother, the late G. Galloway Reynolds.)
While reading Ruth’s articles (which can be found online at Our Methodist Heritage), it became clear to me why Ruth was the spokesperson for this stop on the graveyard tour. Ruth is not only a long-time member of Lewisville United Methodist Church and the sister of Lewisville’s foremost historian, G. Galloway Reynolds, but her writings reflect that she, like her brother, cherishes history and seeks out the lessons it can teach us.

Mystery and Majesty

The blooms of a beautiful Turk's Cap Lily (Lilium superbum) hang in splendor before a blurred-out background of yellow daylilies.
Unexpected Beauty
Little did I know when I pulled out of the driveway one recent morning that I’d soon run smack-dab into mystery and majesty.
I was driving along Yadkinville Road, intent on checking out possible photo opportunities at a nearby farm, when I glanced toward one of the private drives in the Sattsgate development. There, I saw a lady tending a large, beautiful patch of yellow daylilies. I thought, “Wow! I’ve never noticed those beauties before! I’m turning around to check them out.”
When I got out of my truck, I introduced myself to Mrs. Barbara Brooks, a retired nurse. Our conversation went on for at least an hour, as Barbara graciously showed me around the floral paradise that surrounds the home where she lives with her husband, Dr. Joe Brooks, a retired N.C. State horticulturist. (You should also know that Dr. Brooks proudly drives a bright red — really clean — pickup truck with an NCSU plate on the front!)

Fun on the Fourth

The Downtown Band helped Lewisville rock, swing and roll to a wide variety of musical favorites throughout the July Fourth Celebration in Shallowford Square.
Small Town, Big Celebration
Lewisville may be a small town, but we sure know how to celebrate the Fourth of July. The ingredients are simple: good music, a lawn chair or blanket, some good eats, and people who enjoy being with each other. Oh, and spectacular fireworks, too!
This year’s big Fourth of July Celebration in Shallowford Square featured The DownTown Band playing non-stop under the pavilion till the last blast of the fireworks later in the evening. The band’s range of pop and southern and classic rock offered something for almost everyone.
As the evening wore on, the crowd had grown until it seemed that Shallowford Square could hold no more. Yet the celebration wasn’t limited to the Square. Folks had gathered all along the main thoroughfare through Lewisville and along nearby side streets to celebrate the Fourth of July with family and friends.
At some point during the fireworks display, the band performed Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” The song reminded me of the privilege we have to gather freely, to celebrate the foundations of our country — and even to have fun on the Fourth of July.
