Dancers of all ages swayed to live music performed at Lewisville's 2009 Beach Blast. The Fabulous Kays, shown in the background, were followed by The Embers later in the day.

Hot Day, Hot Music

A hot day with hot music is an apt summary of Lewisville’s 2009 Beach Blast held this past Saturday (June 20). The high temps didn’t seem to matter to those who danced away in the faux beach area in front of the bandstand. Music, laughter, and the wonderful aroma of grilled burgers, hot dogs, ribs and other treats filled the air around Shallowford Square.

The Fabulous Kays, from Charlotte, opened the event and were followed by The Embers.

Early Departure

For the second year in a row, my photo coverage of the Beach Blast was cut short due to the onset of severe leg cramps. Although I thought I had prepared adequately to prevent leg cramps this year, my strategy failed. Unfortunately, my early departure meant that I made no photos of the latter portion of the event — and thus no photos of The Embers — for which I am disappointed.

I’d like to thank members of the Lewisville Fire Department who came to my aid once more. (Gentlemen, I honestly did not want to meet you again under such circumstances!) Others who assisted me before the Fire Department guys took over were several unknown folks, as well as David Matthews, a town staff person. Thank you all for your care and concern.

I did manage, though, to take a number of photos before my early departure. If you’d like to see some highlights of the event before I was literally hauled off the scene, please visit the 2009 Beach Blast photo gallery. West Forsyth Jazz Band

On Saturday, May 16, the West Forsyth Jazz Band played for the Music Under the Stars concert series at Shallowford Square in Lewisville. Under the direction of Chris Garmon, the band performed a variety of jazz pieces throughout the evening, including solos by a number of instrumentalists.

The students and adults playing in the jazz band obviously enjoy making music and sharing it with others. When you look at the evening’s photos in the photo gallery, you can see the passion and enthusiasm in their eyes. That passion coupled with skill is what makes their music so enjoyable.

In the NEXT SECTION, take a look at a few of my favorite shots of the band. You’ll also find a link to the rest of the photos in the photo gallery. CLICK for more photos from Music Under the Stars

Sweet Music

The sound of foot-tapping jazz music drifted through Shallowford Square yesterday evening, as the West Forsyth Jazz Band put on a dynamite performance in Lewisville’s first Music Under the Stars concert of the season.

I found it remarkable that these high schoolers were performing at such a high musical level. Enthusiastically directed by Chris Garmon, a music teacher at West Forsyth, the band capably performed one nicely done song after another. What a talented group of young men and one lovely lady.

The Unity Moravian Church band provided the music for Lewisville's annual Easter Sunrise Service held at Shallowford Square.

Celebration and Communion

It was a beautiful morning for Lewisville’s Community Sunrise Service, which was hosted by six area churches. The beauty of the morning — punctuated by the sweet songs of birds — was a wonderful setting for the Easter message.

At the end of this post, I’ve provided a link to the photo gallery containing photographs made throughout the service, as well as a link to a condensed audio recording of the service. (The recording excludes the time during which folks filed in line to receive communion). Identified below are the ministers who led various portions of the service.
