The Next Stop on the Tour

The fourth of six stops on the 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour that was held on May 2, 2009 in Lewisville took us to the graveyard at Lewisville Baptist Church. (Click to read the previous post on the Historic Graveyard Tour at Panther Creek Plantation.)

Although the graveyard at Lewisville Baptist Church is not as old as some of the other graveyards on the tour, such as the Shiloh Lutheran Church and the Concord United Methodist Church graveyards, it nevertheless holds historic significance.

Leading this segment of the graveyard tour was Mary Alice Warren, a member of Lewisville Baptist Church. Mary Alice concentrated her brief talk on the center portion of the graveyard that includes the gravestones of Lewisville’s founder, Lewis Laugenour, and his wife, Betty.

Tour Overview

This past Saturday (May 2, 2009) I joined about 20 other individuals on the Historic Graveyard Tour that took us to six historic graveyards in the Lewisville Township. The tour began at the Lewisville Library and was sponsored by the Lewisville Historical Society’s Sesquicentennial Steering Committee. The six graveyards we visited are located at the following sites:

  • Concord United Methodist Church
  • Double Springs AME Zion Church (the church building no longer exists)
  • Panther Creek Plantation (private property)
  • Lewisville Baptist Church
  • Lewisville United Methodist Church
  • Shiloh Lutheran Church

Before departing for our first stop, each tour participant received a handout with information on each historic graveyard. Upon arriving at each graveyard, we were met by an individual who provided additional history regarding each site.

Upcoming Coverage

I took a number of photos at each graveyard, and I also tried to capture some audio of the oral historical session provided at each site. Over the next few weeks, I’ll feature each graveyard separately, with lots of photos, and possibly some audio, if the recording quality is good. I’ll be interspersing the coverage of each graveyard between other Lewisville events until each of the graveyards has been covered.

Meanwhile, shown next is a photo from each of the historic graveyards.

The Unity Moravian Church band provided the music for Lewisville's annual Easter Sunrise Service held at Shallowford Square.

Celebration and Communion

It was a beautiful morning for Lewisville’s Community Sunrise Service, which was hosted by six area churches. The beauty of the morning — punctuated by the sweet songs of birds — was a wonderful setting for the Easter message.

At the end of this post, I’ve provided a link to the photo gallery containing photographs made throughout the service, as well as a link to a condensed audio recording of the service. (The recording excludes the time during which folks filed in line to receive communion). Identified below are the ministers who led various portions of the service.

A Gardener’s Delight

Robin McBride of Lewisville, North Carolina loves tending her beautiful garden.

Enthusiasm, Joy, Wonder

There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling.
— Mirabel Osler

Robin McBride seems to find delight all around her — but most especially in her garden. There, she’s enraptured by the smallest of details involving the variety of flowers and plants growing under her watchful care.

I first met Robin when I photographed the Crochet Club at the Lewisville Library last fall. Robin is the instructor for that class, which meets every second Wednesday of the month at 4:00 PM. As enthusiastic as Robin is about crochet, she’s even more passionate about gardening.

The Secret Garden?

Last Saturday I found myself at Robin’s house on Reynolds Road in Lewisville, taking in the scope of her gradually expanding garden.

It’s possible that you’ve driven down Reynolds Road quite unaware of the existence of this little bit of botanical splendor. Currently, while most of Robin’s gardening handiwork is not yet visible from the road, she’s implementing a plan to adorn the front yard nearest to the road.

At the heart of all photography is an urge to express our deepest personal feelings - to reveal our inner, hidden selves, to unlock the artist. Those of us who become photographers are never satisfied with just looking at someone else's expression of something that is dear to us. We must produce our own images, instead of buying postcards and photo books. We seek to make our own statements of individuality. —Galen Rowell
