Graveyard Tour – Double Springs AME Zion

A solitary German shepherd rests for a few moments in the peaceful surroundings of the Double Springs AME Zion Church graveyard in Lewisville, North Carolina.
Double Springs AME Zion Church
The second of six stops on the 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour held on May 2, 2009 in Lewisville, North Carolina took us to the site of Double Springs AME Zion Church. (Click to read the previous post on the Historic Graveyard Tour at Concord United Methodist Church.)
Although the Double Springs AME Zion Church building no longer exists, the ties of family and faith played a key role in resurrecting the church’s once-neglected and much-vandalized graveyard which dates back to the early 1900s.

Historic Graveyard Tour – Concord UMC

Participants in the 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour explored the graveyard at Concord United Methodist Church with church member Shelton Barefoot (right).
Touring the Graveyard
The first stop on the 2009 Historic Graveyard Tour held on May 2, 2009 (previously introduced in the Historic Graveyard Tour post) was Concord United Methodist Church. Church members Shelton Barefoot and Wilma Jones shared information and answered questions on the church and the graveyard.
Included in the links below is a five-minute AUDIO CLIP in which you’ll hear Shelton and Wilma explain some of the history of Concord United Methodist Church and its graveyard. As the oldest Methodist congregation in Forsyth County, you’ll hear of the church’s founding in the late 1700s and of the great land deal initiated by charter member, Henry Stultz. You’ll also learn about the numerous veterans buried in the graveyard.

Easter Sunrise Service

The Unity Moravian Church band provided the music for Lewisville's annual Easter Sunrise Service held at Shallowford Square.
Celebration and Communion
It was a beautiful morning for Lewisville’s Community Sunrise Service, which was hosted by six area churches. The beauty of the morning — punctuated by the sweet songs of birds — was a wonderful setting for the Easter message.
At the end of this post, I’ve provided a link to the photo gallery containing photographs made throughout the service, as well as a link to a condensed audio recording of the service. (The recording excludes the time during which folks filed in line to receive communion). Identified below are the ministers who led various portions of the service.

Eat Your Veggies

While a Beginning Vegetable Gardening workshop attendee makes notes (foreground), Ann Williams (center), a Master Gardener and a Forsyth County Extension Agent, instructs another workshop attendee on growing a tomato plant from seed. The workshop is one of a range of gardening topics being taught this spring throughout the Forsyth County Public Library system.
Vegetable Gardening
So which is better — cow manure or horse manure? Say what?! No, really! That’s a serious (yet humorous) issue that arose during yesterday’s (March 23) Beginning Vegetable Gardening workshop held at the Lewisville Library. The workshop was led by Ann Williams, a Master Gardener and a Forsyth County Extension Agent.
Other topics discussed ranged from gardening tools, soil testing, and tips on buying seeds, to how to keep animals from eating our delicious vegetables and beautiful flowers. The spontaneous question-and-answer segments throughout the workshop also yielded valuable gardening tips.
More Workshops Coming Up
The Beginning Vegetable Gardening workshop is just one of many gardening workshops being co-sponsored this spring by the Forsyth County – NC Cooperative Extension Service and the Forsyth County Public Libraries.
The gardening workshop topics are varied, including shade gardening, container gardening and butterfly/hummingbird gardening. Besides covering various types of gardening, some of the other related workshops being offered are Drought Tolerant Perennials, Spring Lawn Care, Invasives, and Indoor Plants. Best of all, the workshops are FREE and open to the public.
