A Day in the Park

Several diverse events took place in Lewisville yesterday. Of the two from which I secured some good photos, I’ll feature today the A Day in the Park event held at Shallowford Square.
The event’s sponsor, the Epilepsy Institute of North Carolina, with NCEASE (North Carolina Epilepsy Awareness Support and Education), orchestrated a day of fun, food and music in an effort to promote awareness, support and education regarding epilepsy.
Enthusiasm and fellowship were evident all around Shallowford Square. Kids were bouncing, sliding and getting snazzy (non-permanent) tattoos! Adults were also involved with their children and conversed with each other, while often taking in the support and information available on epilepsy. Rock-and-roll music was provided by the Winston-Salem-based band, Sub Q.

A Simple Metaphor

A Northern Mockingbird flew onto the lamppost and sat there for perhaps a full minute. My guess was that he (or she) was in the process of collecting material for a nest. In the midst of his work, he appeared to be resting a bit and observing the early-morning activity in our small town. After a few moments, he flew away, no doubt eventually finishing his tasks with an instinctive dedication and precision.
I thought about the freedom that birds have to fly to any high perch of their choosing. How exhilarating it would be to fly unhampered as our feathered friends do: Launching effortlessly into an inviting expanse. Banking in one direction, then another. Diving with abandon and soaring to great heights.
It strikes me that the sparrow could be a simple metaphor of the life intended for all of God’s creation, including humankind:
Flying – Landing. Working – Resting. Diving – Soaring.
UPDATE ON 1/3/09: Many thanks to Doug Demarest of Yadkin County for notifying me that I had initially misidentified this little bird as a Sparrow!
Animal Attraction

WARNING! This is NOT a stuffed animal! He’s real, he’s cute — and he’s lethal! Well, maybe not lethal, but he’s certainly irresistible! If my memory’s correct, this little fellow’s name is George. I guess he had me so rattled when we met that I didn’t think to write down his name. All I know is I was compelled to speak to him, to introduce myself, and to rub that furry little head! Little George simply captured my heart.
I do hope George and I will meet again soon. Till then, I’ll have to find some way to go on!
Have you seen George?!
Down to Earth

It was a nice morning to be out photographing. Walkers, runners, and bikers had the same idea. Besides the refreshing weather, I’m sure these two enjoyed each other’s company.
